What first drew my attention was the pink chest. It’s that statement piece, the pièce de résistance, which really makes the room. Actually, it’s not even the piece but the color that makes the statement. Imagine the chest stained brown or painted white. The room would feel much more ordinary, wouldn’t it? Another great thing about this chest is that it can be done on a very small budget. This chest is from Seabrook Classics, but the same statement could be made with an inexpensive chest purchased at a flea market or garage sale (or maybe you already have one sitting in the basement or garage!) which you could paint bright pink (something like Sherwin Williams Impatient Pink or Dragon Fruit would be fun).
Some other things that make this such a great design are:
1. A fair amount of storage packed into a small space. This is accomplished not only by using the 5 drawer chest, but the storage beds. They provide compact storage (and the wicker baskets add some additional texture to the room). Similar beds can be found at places like Pottery Barn Teen, Storage Bed Store, and JC Penney.
2. Creative, inexpensive artwork - distressed frames, which again could be purchased inexpensively at a garage sale or flea market, with vases of Gerber daisies. It looks as if they may have used wallpaper or fabric in the background of the frame.
3. A great floral theme that isn’t overdone. It starts in the rug and is subtly repeated in the pillows and artwork.
4. You can’t tell the age of the occupants. It seems to be a girl’s bedroom, but the age is not apparent and makes the design more long lasting. It could also just be a cute cottage guest room.
5. An understated background allows the look to be changed fairly inexpensively by repainting the chest and swapping out the rug, pillows and artwork.
Stepping it up a bit in the glamour category is this room from Southern Living. The walls (Pink Sky from Ralph Lauren Paint) are the first thing your eyes are drawn to and are obviously the pièce de résistance here with the headboard coming in a very close second. As with the first room, you know that it is a girl’s bedroom but the age is not apparent. This look could also be inexpensively modified at any time by repainting the walls and changing out the accent pillow.

And last, but certainly not least is this bedroom from Coastal Living. I know it’s not a pink bedroom, but I thought I could sneak it in because of the pink pillow! Again, a very understated background allows these pops of color to take center stage and add that panache that we’re all looking for. This look could easily be imitated with flea market finds and could quickly and inexpensively be changed just by repainting the painted pieces and swapping out pillows and lampshades.
So the next time you think pink for a girl’s bedroom, remember these rooms and let them inspire you to go outside the box and add that extra panache that will set the room apart.
