A Simple Formula for Mixing Fabrics in Kids Rooms

Hi Design Dazzle Readers!
It's Autumn Clemons, here to share with you a simple formula to help you in
designing a fun and unique room for any child!
My favorite children's rooms are ones that have texture and color and reflect the
personality of the child that lives in it.
But sometimes, people can get stuck knowing where to begin the design of a kids room.
One easy "formula" to use is to start with a "fun" fabric that you know your child will love.
next, add some simple, graphic, child-friendly bedding,
and then mix in two additional patterns, that can be used as accents.
here is an example of how this formula would work in a boy's room:

And, the same formula, applied to a girls room:

By using this easy formula of mixing in a few fun "adult friendly" graphic patterns with some
"kid-appealing" patterns, you will be sure to create a unique and whimsical look that will grow with
your child for years to come.

Using Vintage Embroidery in Kids Rooms

A big welcome to our newest contributor - Autumn Clemons of design*dump. Autumn has fantastic taste and wonderful design ideas. I'm so excited to have her as one of our Design Dazzle contributors!

Hello! My name is Autumn Clemons, and I am happy to be a new Feature Contributor here
at Design Dazzle. I have always loved using this great site as a source for all things related to
kids and design, and I look forward to sharing some fun design tricks and tips and projects with you!

As an Interior Designer with three kids, I am always looking for cute and inexpensive
ways to create character and add charm to kids rooms. One of my favorite ways to do this is with vintage embroidery.
In this nursery I designed, an embroidered flower map adds
vintage charm, and ties in with the color scheme.

This embroidered map was purchased off Ebay for less than $20!
In this playroom, a collection of embroidered USA maps adds whimsy,

and has educational value.
In my sons room, I used a set of embroidered cars.

Also purchased off Ebay, this set came with mats, frames and glass,
but the original mats were in rough shape, so I had them replaced.

I love all the detail!

In this room, another set of vintage cars in black and gold dictated the color scheme.
Two vintage needlepoint figures fit
into a fun collage on her soft turquoise walls in my oldest daughters room.

I love the sense of history that these vintage pieces add to a kids room.
Each one took hours and hours to complete, and is truly a labor of love...just like our kiddos!

In my other daughters room, a vintage floral embroidery adds to the feminine feel of the room.

All of these vintage embroideries were purchased from local antique stores, or off Ebay, and cost less than $20. If you are lucky enough to have some embroidery that your grandmother, great-grandmother or other family member has done, pull it out of the attic, and put in in your kids room.
It will add instant character and charm to any kids space!

5 Trends to Love for the Nursery

GUEST POST:  A warm welcome to Priscila from Little Miss Heirlooms (rediscovered vintage fun for your little one). Priscila recently started her fabulous blog and has quite a following. About her blog: "At Little Miss Heirlooms we strive to provide authentic vintage pieces that can be easily incorporated into a child's living space. We encourage thinking "outside the box" when decorating a nursery, toddlers room or playroom in order to make a child's space as whimsical and magical as possible!"

Hi Everyone! This is Priscila from Little Miss Heirlooms! I am super excited to share 5 trends I'm loving for decorating your child's space!

Adding a sheepskin rug or throw can transform a nursery space  and make it look and feel so comfy! Using sheepskin is an accessory many designers like to use because  it adds a soft texture to a room which is so appropriate for a nursery. My favorite sheepskin throw can be found here via Ikea. For only $40 you can get a quality and beautiful sheepskin rug which can be used as a throw also!

Maps are such a fun items to us in a nursery, room or playroom because they come in so many different sizes, shapes and colors and you can find them relatively cheap! You can frame maps on the wall as cheap art, decoupage them on a favorite stool or chair or even make a one of a kind lampshade from a vintage map via this tutorial.

Images: Nursery, Monster
Teach your kids that monsters aren't scary by adding one of these super cute "ugly dolls" to their space. Yes, they are really called "ugly dolls." Maybe because they are so ugly they are cute? :)

Watch out Grandma, the old craft of embroidering isn't just yours anymore! Have you seen this trend pop up everywhere? You can get embroidery hoops at any thrift store for next to nothing and personalize your child's space with them. My favorite DIY project using the embroidery hoops is this butterfly mobile DIY!

Wallpaper can make such a huge statement in a room! This is my favorite trend right now for the nursery or your child's space because there are so many patterns to choose from. Whether you like more of a modern look or vintage there is wallpaper to match all tastes! I am planning on wallpapering my son's room as I turn his nursery into a "big" boys room!

What are the trends you love right now for decorating? What are the trends you wish would just go away?

Please Welcome Our Newest Design Dazzle Contributor!

I would like to introduce our newest Design Dazzle Contributor Kelly Porter. I am so excited to have her on board! Kelly is a color expert who loves color.

Bio
I’m a designer, color consultant and blogger living in the Washington, DC area with my husband and three boys. I believe that God uses color everywhere everyday to inspire us, so my designs have an emphasis on color and lighting {light has an intrinsic effect on color}.
In addition to owning Porter House Designs, I also work with Sherwin-Williams and CertaPro Painters as a color consultant. I received my design training from the Sheffield School of Interior Design, I’ve studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and I have a degree in communications from Howard University.
Working with color correctly takes experience and a good eye, and I’ve been blessed to have acquired both over the years. I love helping people bring color into their lives. Be sure to visit my blog, Color Sizzle, for colorful design ideas!
Kelly's first post can be read below:

Make an Easy Change with Wallpaper

The design of your child’s room should rejuvenate, relax and inspire. That may sound like a tall order, but you can accomplish all of this with the skillful use of color and pattern.
Where should you begin? Well, if you haven’t taken a look at wallpaper lately, today’s options deserve a second glance. Wallpaper not only provides instant all-in-one color and pattern, but it can become your inspiration for bedding, window treatments, lighting and fun accessories. These days, you can find “Easy Change” wallpaper – brands that are much easier to install and remove. York {www.yorkwall.com} has several lines of wallpaper that go on smoothly, require no booking time and won’t leave noticeable seams. Best of all, when it’s time for a change, you can remove it by pulling away each strip and it will come down in full pieces. Now, that’s golden! All images from York.

If wallpapering an entire room doesn’t fit into your budget or schedule, consider doing just the wall behind your child’s bed. This is a popular way to create an accent wall and/or a headboard, and it’s perfect for a smaller room where too much pattern could be overwhelming.
Popular colors for kids and teens right now include: ocean blue, navy blue, vibrant pink, orange, lime green, brown and tan. If you select wallpaper that has warm colors – such as pink or orange -- add white furniture or shelves, which is a very hot trend right now. If you’re working with cool colors (like blue or green) throw in a splash of warmth using red, orange or brown accents.
If your child is older, get him or her involved in the design process. Look through wallpaper books together. Getting their input will result in a sense of ownership, which could motivate your child to keep a clean room! Older children also tend to be more consistent with their likes. Consequently, the tastes of younger children change quickly. Therefore, you may want to avoid wallpaper patterns that depict a cartoon or movie personality. Instead, emphasize fun colors. You can always include a favorite character in the form of smaller accessories or framed posters.
Designing your child’s room can create lifelong memories for them. So make it fun, colorful and aim for a space that they will look back on and smile.

Planning Your Baby Nursery

Before picture:

After picture:
You have nine months to create a spectacular space for your new addition! Not only will the space be used for your sweet infant, it will be a place where the rest of the family will spend many precious moments. So start with a plan and have fun decorating!

The Inspiration: Choose one inspirational element that will carry on throughout your nursery! This element can be anything from the crib bedding, a piece of artwork, a family heirloom or even a favorite color. As long as you stay true to the inspiration, the room will have harmony. Of course it is fun to throw a few unique, whimsical pieces here and there!

The Basics: Room to grow! Your baby will be so tiny at first but you will want a room that will grow with him or her. You will need good quality furnishings that will last throughout the childhood years. The basic needs for a baby and a young child are a crib, storage space, changing area and comfortable chair.

The Style: For the first and perhaps only time—your child’s room will reflect your style! Trust your instincts and stick to your inspirational element. Your baby may not remember their first room, but you will! There are so many options for nursery furnishings and linens so take your time deciding on what is right for your family.

The Plan: Plan your baby’s space! Measure the room walls and any door openings or windows. Arrange the furniture in a functional way. The crib should be the first thing you see when you walk into the room. It is practicable and functional to have the changing area near the crib for easy access. Use newspaper or masking tape to map out the room to make sure it works before you make your furniture purchase. It is better to buy less and add later than to buy too much and have it not fit in the room.
