Bluebird Nursery

bird modern nurseryAmanda Barkey sent us these room photos of her son's baby nursery. Amanda describes the process, "My Blue Bird nursery idea was inspired largely by a beautiful quilt that my Aunt made for our baby boy Asher. I picked out the fabrics with her and then loosely based a 'theme' around some of them. Most of them are City Girl Blue Espresso Fabrics which I was totally drawn to because of their contemporary feel. I didn't want the room to be too 'themed' (like Disney or sports) because that’s just not my personal style and I am the one spending the most time in this room. I also wanted it to blend in with other decorating styles in the rest of the house but also have an innocent baby feeling.I added a natural touch with warm wood pieces, rattan pieces and birds used in the decals around the room, the mobile and small touches like bookends and statues. The paint color is Benjamin Moore's Cabot Trial. The wall decals featured around the room are from Urban Outfitters and add a nice pop of bright color. I featured them on all of the walls in the room because I wanted the room to feel like the birds were flying all around. They are also great because they can just peel off when we move or want to replace them.I got the white shelf as a gift but it had some pretty 'cutesy' pastel colored frames on the pegs so I spray painted them brown and then put swatches of quilt fabric in them to tie that element in and I just love it.The frame was a $3 Winners find by my Mom and I simply recovered the matte and added some ribbon and it’s totally transformed. "

"Most of my storage in the room is in the dresser.I love the bird bookends that I found at a cute little vintage shop on a shopping trip with my sister. They will be well used over the years I'm sure- I just love them! The hanging light fixture I found at Ikea in the 'as is' section for $5. I tied lots of swatches of left over fabric that I had onto it. I like it because its unique and gives off a nice soft light.Above the crib you can also see an assortment of 'swatch portraits' that I made for some wall art. They are pretty trendy right now and I like the fact that they look modern and tie in with the quilt. They aren't heavy so I don't have to worry about them falling onto the baby in the crib like a shelf or large piece of art might. They were relatively inexpensive to make, probably $10-15 for all of the hoops and then the cost of material...I don't know how much it cost for the material in each project but for all of the material that I used around the room for different projects I spent about $50. I left the hoops their natural wood because it went with other details in the room like the wicker baskets and the rattan pieces like the hamper. Above the crib you can see my favorite piece in the room, the 'birds of a feather' mobile that I bought online, my one big splurge and I just love the natural organicness of it...not a typical cutesy, bright mobile. the curtain tie backs that I made with fabric that coordinates with the baby bedding. They actually are fastened with Velcro and the button is just sewn on for show.I love the room and I am especially proud of the great finds that I found, how I made or remade things for the room and how it all came together and coordinated without being too matchy or cutesy. It was a lot of work and took about 3 months to pull together but it was SO much fun to do. My favorite part was seeing it all come together at the end, it even turned out better than I thought it would in my mind!"

Sweet Vintage Baby Nursery

Valerie Allen (vgkchick) designed this sweet vintage room for her daughter. Love the colors, the charm and the thriftiness!! Check out more of her photos on flickr.
Valerie:I really enjoyed decorating my daughters pink room. Many of the items were re purposed or recycled. It was such fun pulling everything together to make it work.

Valerie: The lamp was made from artificial flowers bought from the craft store. Simply cut the flowers from the stem and adhere with a hot glue gun. The clothes line was hung up with twine and I hung the little dresses with clothes pins that were painted with acrylic paint. The vintage dresses I found from a clothing store that was shutting down. They were all thrown in a paper bag, I bought them all! The dresser was one that I had when I was growing up- straight from Sears circa early 80's! Bedding and curtains were all sewn by my mother in law. We found all the fabric at a really great price at a local fabric store SAS Fabrics by the Pound. Many of the fabrics you pay by it's weight. The quilt, and framed embroidery prints were all purchased from goodwill at a bargain. The ballet shoes were mine when I was a wee one. I am so glad that my mom saved many of these things so I could use them in my little girl's room.

Valerie: The wall paint is Pink Petals from Benjamin Moore. It is a great shade of pink, not too overwhelming. The crib was purchased new, it is from Wal Mart and was a great fit for the room. I have always wanted a dress form and found the perfect one at a local store in Phoenix, called Figs. I then attached vintage postcards with the same painted clips that I used for the dress line. The large Audrey Hepburn print came from Target and it was a must have, our little girl was named after her. Thank you Valerie for sharing you charming room with us!

Wednesdays - What Color is That??

Laura Beuther designed this cool, modern baby nursery for her son. She wanted to keep the nursery modern and not too babyish, but a room that could easily grow with him. Great color scheme with the brown and blue nursery. She chose orange as the main accent color and also included metal accents. I LOVE her clever idea of using the crib bumper as the window valance. The crib bumper, which would otherwise go unused was re-purposed as a valance!! Way to go!
Paint colors Benjamin Moore Aura (Mineral Alloy 1622, Brown Horse 2108-30, Bittersweet Chocolate 2114-10). To view more photos of this room, click here.

Safari Mod Nursery

boys blue baby nursery
safari baby nursery
It's hard not to be impressed by the creativity, colors and attention to detail Crystal Peterson has put into creating her son's nursery. Isn't this the cutest nursery??? The quote on the wall above the crib "a bundle of joy is our little boy" was made with vinyl decal lettering. The letter "N" centered between the quote is a clever way to use a large monogram letter. Crystal painted the animal boards green, applied vinyl decals and attached ribbon - creative way to make art for a nursery. Love the bold stripe that is centered on the wall and goes around the entire room. The paint colors: Respite (blue), Leapfrog (green) both from Sherwin Williams. The brown paint is Dark Granite by Olympic. To view more photos of the Safari Mod Nursery click here.
Pinkapple Boutique is the place to purchase the vinyl lettering and animal decals. This fun site has an assortment of projects and wallboards you can personalize.

Sewing Anyone?

Sew and create many baby nursery items with this Shirley Botsford Designs pattern from Simplicity. Gotta love the fabric flowers that attach to the crib slats with velcro - great idea. Makes me wonder what else I could velcro to the crib slats - small plush animals, etc??? Make sure items you don't want played with are out of reach of your baby. The classic bed skirt with box pleats gives this crib set timeless appeal.  I also like the different solid color fabrics with the yellow stripe in the middle on the bed skirt. The focal point of this room is the drape hanging over the crib. Be concerned about safety for your baby - securely fasten the crib drape to the wall. Want to tackle this nursery project? You'll need mid-level sewing skills or better yet call a friend who sews!
