Girls Bohemian Bedrooms

With a fun mix of colors and cultures, creating a Bohemian Bedroom could be the perfect way to bring out your child's unique personality.

Bohemian spaces are a blend of modern, vintage and global-ethnic furnishings. This look is casual, free flowing and can take your child beyond the expected design boundaries.

As our world "grows smaller," tribal textiles and other ethnic accents are becoming the focus of the Boho style. This gives us the opportunity to teach our children about other cultures, countries and traditions.

Color is also an important element to this style. Vibrant hues such as pink, red, purple and sapphire can be paired with calming earth tones to create a balanced space.

Also, don't forget the art of display. Jewelry, hair accessories and favorite clothing items can be artfully arranged and hung on pretty hooks or hangers.

In designing a Bohemian space, your child will enjoy mixing, matching and layering...and you just might be surprised by what she comes up with. Read more about the Bohemian style and tribal textiles in my Living Style column {in July} at the Sherwin-Williams website, Stir.

"Green" Room - Girls Whimsical Mermaid Bedroom

Sabrina Soto, host of HGTV's Get it Sold, created this darling mermaid/ocean themed citrus-infused girls room for a green home.
" The whimsical theme extends to the twin daybed, custom-crafted from reclaimed wood by carpenter David Brown and padded and upholstered in striped “Azalea” outdoor fabric. The room’s finishing touches are its best green stories. An ABC chair rail that runs the perimeter of the room features pegs crafted from reclaimed curtain rods. I was running out of time and scrambling to find the perfect wall art. I found this shop close to the HGTV Green Home that sold shells from farm-raised conch. I went with this whole ocean-mermaid theme and made the plaques out of wood scraps from the hardware store," says Soto.

This is my favorite idea from the whole room - custom made ABC chair rail that goes around the perimeter of the room. Pegs were fashioned out of discarded curtain rods.

Wednesdays - What Color is That??

butterfly girls room
girls purple bedroomStacey Tannehill painted this adorable bedroom for her daughter Lauren. Stacey describes the process, "After looking at a room we liked with similar designs on the wall (the flyer was from home depot), we then hand drew all the designs onto transparency sheets (clear plastic sheets of paper). Then we used an overhead projector to transfer them to the walls. I also traced one of the butterflies off of her bedroom set and transferred it to the wall as well.
To get started we painted the walls with "Bed of Roses" by Behr. Then after tracing the designs onto the walls we painted the tallest light pink (looks almost white) ferns with "Rose Fantasy" by Behr. The really dark purple designs (some people think it looks brown in the pics) were painted with "Delicious Berry" by Behr. The butterflies were done with the same colors as well.
We then added trim base board which we stained to match her furniture and added her name which was painted with the same colors above, above the toddler bed.
We picked the colors to coordinate with her bedding and room accessories. Obviously this could be done in any variety of colors and still look great!"

It's all about the owl

It's all about the owl! What a great bedding set by Pottery Barn. The colorful fabrics are a reminder of fabrics from my childhood. Owl-shaped pillows with the applique faces bring whimsy to the bed set. Love the branches and butterflies surrounding the bed. Wall color to match this bedding - Byte Blue by Sherwin Williams.
